WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Susan Collins today announced that she has received a written assurance from the United States Postal Service (USPS) that the Walpole Post Office will remain open. In addition, the USPS says that it will permanently fill the Postmaster position that has been vacant since February 2003.
“The Walpole Post Office, like so many of our post offices, is a staple of the community, and is an important element of the daily lives of local residents,” said Senator Collins. “The absence of a Postmaster has led to local speculation that this may be the first step in a potential closure of the Walpole Post Office. I am pleased however, that District Officials with the U.S. Postal Service have assured me that the Post Office will remain open and that they will soon begin seeking applicants to fill the vacant Postmaster position.”
On March 15, 2006, Senator Collins wrote a letter to the Postmaster General expressing community concerns and her strong support for the continued operations of the Walpole Post Office. In that letter, Senator Collins requested the installation of a permanent Postmaster to bolster managerial aspects of daily operations and signal support for the future of the post office.
Senator Collins is chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs which has oversight of the U.S. Postal Service.
