Washington D.C. - U.S. Senator's Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan M. Collins (R-ME) have asked the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education to restore funding for the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant program. The program provides funds to address a variety of public heath issues including critical support for programs in Maine. "Eliminating the Preventative Health and Health Services Block Grant program will force state and local health departments to drastically reduce or even cease work to protect our public health. What is at stake is Maine's ability to provide preventative dental care and control the spread of dangerous infectious diseases like tuberculosis and rabies," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "This program deserves our full support and we hope the Senate Appropriations Committee heads our call." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the 13 major operating components of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). They aim to prevent and control infectious and chronic diseases, injuries, workplace hazards, disabilities, and environmental health threats. CDC conducts research and investigations and applies research and findings to improve people's daily lives.
