WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded Maine $509,640 in federal grants for various transportation projects.
“These grants from the Department of Transportation are vital in the ongoing effort to improve Maine’s transportation infrastructure and to ensure safety, efficiency, and accessibility for Maine residents and visitors,” said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.
The funding is distributed as follows:
• $25,000 for continued implementation of the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan along Routes 4 and 17 in Franklin and Oxford Counties
• $25,000 for continued implementation of the Schoodic Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan along Routes 1 and 186 in Hancock County
• $24,000 for continued implementation of the Acadia Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan along Route 3 on Mount Desert Island
• $22,080 for rest areas on Old Canada Road in Sandy Bay Township and the Town of Solon
• $60,160 for construction of a scenic turnout overlooking Flagstaff Lake and the Bigalow mountain range along State Route 27 near Eustis and Stratton
• $150,000 for construction of a year round restroom facility and public garden at the intersection of Routes 4 and 17 in Oquossoc along the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway
• $32,200 for a Financial Sustainability Project to investigate the feasibility of a Maine Byways membership card for Byway users and residents that would entitle card holders to discounts at participating vendors
• $100,000 for a village revitalization effort in Winter Harbor that will include the construction of pedestrian walkways and improvements in wayfinding signage
• $46,400 for final construction of the Chain of Ponds Scenic Overlook along State Route 27 between Coburn Grove and Sarampus Falls
• $24,800 for continued implementation of the Old Canada Road Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan along the northern most 78 miles of Route 201, starting in Solon
