WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) in the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the Maine Department of Public Safety two grants totaling $1,224,254 for drug enforcement and treatment programs in Maine.
“The funds awarded by the Department of Justice will enable the Maine Department of Public Safety to not only maintain current drug prevention, enforcement, and treatment programs but to expand those efforts as well,” Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. “Substance abuse poses serious challenges for our state, and we are pleased to see federal support for Maine’s ongoing efforts to combat this problem.”
• $1,172,583 through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) to sustain current statewide multi-jurisdictional drug task force activities
• $50,671 through the Residential Substance Treatment Formula Grant Program (RSAT) to provide residential substance abuse treatment for incarcerated inmates in Maine’s correctional system
