SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE NEARLY $2 MILLION IN TRANSIT FUNDS

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan M. Collins (R-ME) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $1,718,463 to the Casco Bay Island Transit District and the Maine Department of Transportation for bus systems. The Casco Bay Island Transit District received $1,475,518 and the Maine Department of Transportation received $242,945.

"This recent funding will allow recipient communities to maintain, expand, and improve necessary transportation-related infrastructure while augmenting safety and service capabilities," Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement.

Funding awarded to the Casco Bay Island Transit District (CBITD) will be used to upgrade the current Casco Bay Island Transit District facility to provide better connectivity with the local bus and taxi service and to improve passenger safety by segregating pedestrian and vehicular flow paths. The project will also allow for expansion of the ticketing and passenger waiting areas to meet the needs of future growth.

Funding awarded to The Maine Department of Transportation will be used for preliminary design and engineering costs associated with the preparation of the Environmental Assessment for construction of the Acadia Multimodal Transportation/Welcome Center in Trenton, Maine.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) aims to improve safety, increase mobility in support of the nation's economy, protect human and natural environment, achieve organizational excellence, and support the national security strategy.  DOT has provided the grants allocated to Maine through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).  The FAA issues and enforces regulations and minimum standards covering manufacturing, operating, and maintaining aircraft.
