SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE NEARLY $2 MILLION TO MAINE AIRPORTS

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded airports and towns throughout Maine $1,920,008 in federal funding for airport-related projects.    “Airport infrastructure is a critical part of our transportation system,” Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. “Funding from the Department of Transportation will allow recipient airports to make much-needed improvements to their facilities and thereby increase the operational safety of their services.”   The following will receive funding:   • $1,000,000 to the Northern Aroostook Regional Airport in Frenchville to remove obstructions to approach and transition surfaces • $600,000 to Portland International Jetport for noise mitigation improvements, lighting and electrical vault upgrades, and the acquisition of an interactive driver training system to boost operational safety • $170,000 to the Millinocket Municipal Airport for the acquisition of two hangars and associated land, which will allow for the development of revenue-producing facilities at the airport • $150,008 to the Town of Wiscasset for continued construction of a taxiway for the Wiscasset Airport’s single runway The Department of Transportation (DOT) aims to improve safety, increase mobility in support of the nation’s economy, protect human and natural environment, achieve organizational excellence, and support the national security strategy.  DOT serves the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people.
