Washington D.C. - U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $973,777 in housing funding to entities throughout Maine .
“The various services funded and supported by HUD’s grants are essential to communities throughout Maine ,” said Senators Snowe and Collins. “These programs serve some of the most vulnerable populations and provide housing to those who would not be able to afford it otherwise.”
$500,000 has been awarded to the Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians as part of an Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG). The ICDBG Program for Indian Tribes and Alaskan Native Villages is a competitive assistance program. The primary purpose of this program is the development of viable Native American communities, including decent housing, a suitable living environment, and economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate income.
$396,281 has been awarded to the University of Maine System as part of a Community Outreach Partnerships Center (COPC) New Grants Program. These grants provide funds to two-year and four-year colleges and universities to establish and operate COPCs to address the problems of urban areas.
$45,574 has been awarded to the Housing Authority of the City of Brewer , $15,398 to the Lewiston Housing Authority, and $16,524 to the Portland Housing authority as part of HUD’s Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program. The Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency program provides funding for Public Housing Authorities and tribes to hire a program coordinator to link participating families to the supportive services they need to achieve self-sufficiency.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds private housing developments to assist in housing opportunities for low-income residents. HUD provides rental assistance to approximately 1.5 million low-income households. It also funds community revitalization projects to meet local needs and expand opportunities for Americans.
