"It should continue to be a national priority for all Americans to have access to safe, affordable housing," remarked Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "There grants will go a long way to create a better standard of living in the communities to which they were awarded."
The funds are allocated as follows: • $1,177,277 for The City of Lewiston to improve housing, create a suitable living environment, and expand the economic opportunities for the citizens of Lewiston.
• $425,000 for the Indian Township Passamaquoddy to assist with the replacement of a wastewater treatment facility that is discharging sewage on the reservation. The Tribe hopes to replace the absorption field and increase lagoon capacity. The Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG) provides funds for Indian and Alaskan Native communities to develop better housing and create a healthy living environment.
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is one of the oldest programs in HUD and provides annual grants to various programs that help develop urban communities and decent housing. The (HUD) funds private housing developments to assist in housing opportunities for low income residents. HUD provides rental assistance to approximately 1.5 million low-income households. It also funds community revitalization projects to meet local needs and expand opportunities for Americans. ###
