The funds will be allocated as follows: • $92,036 to the Aroostook Band of Micmacs • $100,000 to the Penobscot Indian Nation • $400,000 to the Maine Public Utilities Commission • $3,081,589 to the Maine State Housing Authority
"Energy concerns are some of the most pervasive in America today," Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "Funding for programs that help people meet their energy needs is essential. These grants will help bring renewable energy technologies that are clean, reliable and affordable to the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and the Penobscot Indian Nation as well as fund various energy related programs that are critical to the state of Maine."
The funds awarded to the two local American Indians tribes will assist Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Development on Tribal Lands. The EERE mission is to strengthen America''s energy security, environmental quality, and economic vitality in public-private partnerships, as well as enhance energy efficiency, productivity and make a difference in the everyday lives of Americans by enhancing their energy choices and their quality of life.
Funding awarded to the Maine Public Utilities Commission will be used for the Maine State Energy Program. The grant awarded to the Maine State Housing Authority will be used for the Maine Weatherization Assistance Program.
