"We strongly believe that sustainable economic development in the Northern Forest region is vital to enhancing the area's economic opportunities and conserving the forest's land base," said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "In order to achieve real progress, we must focus on galvanizing a collaborative regional effort with community, business, environmental, and government involvement. This funding from the EDA will provide the financial support the region needs to develop and implement a successful economic strategy for the region."
The grant will be used to promote economic diversification and create new, high value job opportunities. It will develop an economic development strategy amongst the four northern forest states so there is not a specific amount set aside for each state. However, Maine contains the largest portion of the Northern Forest. Snowe and Collins will work closely with the grantees for creative new policy approaches for the Northern Forest area and are currently in discussions with other Senators from New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont to develop legislation that would establish a Northern Forest Regional Sustainable Development Commission. The bill has garnered support from those engaged in economic development revitalization and from the conservation community.
This EDA investment will serve as a foundation for future economic successes that will benefit both families and businesses in the Northern Forest region. EDA provides financial assistance to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the Untied States. Their mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
