WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has awarded Catholic Charities Maine $450,000 to help provide services for refugees who have settled in Maine.
“This funding from the Department of Health & Human Services is critical for Catholic Charities Maine, the only agency in Maine authorized to administer the federal program that resettles refugees in this country,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “Catholic Charities Maine plays a crucial role in helping those refugees who are trying to rebuild their lives here in the United States.”
Catholic Charities Maine assists refugees access housing in the Portland and Lewiston areas, learn English skills, find jobs, and locate medical and mental health services.
The Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. The Department includes more than 300 programs, covering a wide spectrum of activities, and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined.
