WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) in the Department of Justice has awarded the Maine Department of Health and Human Services a $350,000 grant under the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Program to support and enhance state efforts to prevent minors from buying and consuming alcoholic beverages.
“We are pleased to see additional federal support for Maine in its ongoing efforts to prevent the underage consumption and purchasing of alcohol,” Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. “Alcohol-related crime and health problems raise serious concerns for our state, and as such, it is important to ensure that minors are denied access to alcoholic beverages.”
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) provides national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization. OJJDP supports states and communities in their efforts to develop and implement effective and coordinated prevention and intervention programs and to improve the juvenile justice system so that it protects public safety, holds offenders accountable, and provides treatment and rehabilitative services tailored to the needs of juveniles and their families.
