"Portland is the gateway to much of the state of Maine and so it is vital that it's port remains adequately protected," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "During this time of increased terrorism and world unrest, we must be especially vigilant about protecting our homeland. This Port Security Grant is necessary to fortify Portland's harbor and ensure the continued safety of all Maine residents."
This Port Security grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness (SLGCP). The Port Security Grant program provides financial assistance to owners and operators of ports, terminals, U.S. inspected passenger vessels and ferries, as well as port authorities and State and local agencies to improve security for operators and passengers through physical security enhancements. The fiscal year Port Security Grant program will provide over $140 million for port security grants.
