SENATORS SNOWE, COLLINS PRAISE FEMA’S DECISION TO PROVIDE DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR WASHINGTON COUNTY

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today praised FEMA’s decision to provide federal disaster assistance for areas of Washington County that were impacted by the Patriot’s Day storm.  Today’s amended disaster declaration will release public assistance funds to help repair damaged public facilities and infrastructure.  President Bush has already declared 12 other Maine counties eligible for public assistance.               “We are pleased that FEMA has made the decision to include Washington County in its disaster declaration,” said Senators Snowe and Collins.  “FEMA is currently reviewing incoming damage assessments to help restore our public infrastructure that was damaged during this terrible storm.”               The public assistance funds will provide aid to state and local governments for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster damaged facilities.  In addition, all counties in Maine are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.  Earlier this month, FEMA announced that it will provide Individual Assistance for residents of Cumberland and York Counties who were impacted by the Patriot’s Day storm.               ###
