WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded companies in Scarborough and Freeport grants totaling $630,914.   “We are pleased that these Maine companies are on the cutting edge of medical research,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.  “This federal funding will help these companies find more effective ways to identify, manage, and prevent human disease.”               The federal grants were apportioned as follows:
  • $244,206 grant from the National Center for Research Resources to the Foundation for Blood Research in Scarborough to fund research infrastructure.
  • $386,708 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to Sea Run Holdings in Freeport to fund clinical research related to neurological disorders.
The Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) is the United States government's principle agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.  The Department includes more than 300 programs that cover a wide spectrum of activities and administers more grant dollars than all of the federal agencies combined.   ###
