SENATORS SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $60,000 FOR MAINE FOREST SERVICE

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the Maine Forest Service has been awarded $60,725 in FIRE Act grants by the Department of Homeland Security.

"Maine's forests are an important part of our state's history and economic prosperity," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "The Maine Forest Service is a valuable asset to the future of our state's forests, and these additional funds will allow them to continue their essential work."

The "Assistance to Firefighter's Grant Program," or FIRE Act, grants were created with strong endorsement from Senators Snowe and Collins. The grants are awarded directly to fire departments and services to support fire safety and prevention programs.

The funds given to the Maine Forest Service will be used for a Fire Prevention Program which includes public education and awareness activities, fire code enforcement activities, fire inspector certifications and other activities. The program also allows funds to purchase wild land mitigation, and arson prevention as well as detection activities.

FIRE Act grants are awarded to fire departments across the United States to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, Emergency Medical Service programs, and Fire Prevention and Safety programs and to purchase new fire equipment.
