WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a collaborative of five Maine high schools a grant in the amount of $2,398,038 to help prepare students for post-secondary education and work opportunities. The federal Small Learning Communities (SLC) grant will benefit more than 6,000 students attending Bonny Eagle, Lewiston, Oxford Hills, South Portland, and Noble High Schools.
“This grant will provide critical support for these five large high schools by creating small learning communities within their buildings,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “These learning communities will provide greater personalization of learning and will set rigorous academic standards for all students. These five high schools will collaborate to ensure that every student graduates ready for post-secondary education, work, and citizenship.”
The goal of the SLC program is to assist students in each of these five high schools to be reading, writing, and computing on grade level by the end of 10th grade; to support all students to graduate ready for college, work, and citizenship; and to establish equitable, academically rigorous, and personalized grade 9-12 Vertically Aligned Communities of common students with a core group of teachers.
