SENATORS SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $2 MILLION IN EMERGENCY GRANT FUNDING TO ASSIST BRUNSWICK NAVAL AIR STATION WORKERS

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a National Emergency Grant (NEG) in the amount of $2,497,927 to the State of Maine to assist workers affected by the closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station.

"This National Emergency Grant will help the displaced workers acquire the employment services and assistance they need to rejoin the workforce," Senators Snowe and Collins said. "In these challenging economic times, it is vital that citizens facing unemployment receive adequate training assistance in growing industries in order to navigate the difficult job market."

NEG funds are provided to states, at the discretion of the Secretary of Labor, to provide services such as job training and retraining and job placement services to displaced workers. To date, the U.S. Department of Labor has provided an initial planning award of $1,273,628 to Maine in June 2005, along with a $2 million NEG in February 2008. This brings total funding to date for this project to $5,771,555.
