U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the Department of Homeland Security has awarded the following grants to Maine fire departments; Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department, $23,675; Calais Fire Department, $47,500; and the Frankfort Village Fire Department, $73,389. All grant dollars will be directed to operations and safety and will be awarded as part of the FIRE Act Grant Program.
“The FIRE Grant Program has provided crucial resources to fire departments throughout Maine to help them strengthen their ability to respond to emergencies,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “These dollars will provide our first responders in Charlotte, Calais, and Frankfort Village with resources to better serve their communities.”
The departments will receive funding through the Operations and Firefighting Safety Program, which consists of training, equipment, wellness and fitness, and modifications to the departments’ facilities.
The FIRE Act Grant program was created with strong endorsements from Senators Snowe and Collins. These grants are awarded to fire departments across the United States to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, emergency medical service programs, and Fire Prevention and Safety programs, and to purchase new fire equipment.
