SENATORS SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE ALMOST $1 MILLION TO CONSERVE NATURAL HABITAT FOR ENDANGERED SPECIES

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a $946,000 federal matching grant for a program called Landowner Incentive Program (LIP). This will be matched by an additional $545,000. The program supports cooperative efforts with private landowners interested in conserving natural habitat for species at risk.               LIP, funded through competitive grants with money from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, establishes and supplements existing landowner incentive programs that provide technical and financial assistance to private landowners. The money will be used to provide this assistance to Maine landowners to manage, restore and protect the habitat of some 1,000 acres of habitat and 15 at-risk species on private lands in southern and coastal Maine.                         “The Landowner Incentive Program has helped educate and assist landowners in preserving Maine’s ecosystem,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.  “We are delighted that this funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will help even more Maine residents enhance and protect the natural beauty of Maine.”               ###
