SENATORS SNOWE, COLLINS ANNOUNCE $527,465 IN GRANT FUNDING FOR KATAHDIN PAPER EMPLOYEES

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has approved a National Emergency Grant (NEG) in the amount of $527,465 to assist workers that were displaced by layoffs at Katahdin Paper in Millinocket. The funding will be provided to the Eastern Maine Development Corporation.

In September, the Senators sent a letter to Department of Labor Secretary Elaine Chao encouraging her to support the request for NEG funding.

In a joint statement the Senators said, “This assistance is welcome news and we commend the Department of Labor for approving it. These funds will go a long way in helping displaced Katahdin paper workers during this difficult time.”

NEG funds are provided to states, at the discretion of the Secretary to provide services such as job training and retraining and job placement services to displaced workers.
