"Maine is fortunate to have many community development organizations that serve to improve the quality of life of our citizens. Within these organizations, Head Start programs target the youngest members of our communities and serve as stepping-stones to greater educational opportunities," said the Senators in a joint statement. "With grants totaling more than $2 million, these communities will enjoy improved Head Start programs and the critical support they provide young children."
Head Start was established in 1965 to promote school readiness and provide a comprehensive array of health, nutritional and social services to eligible four and five year old preschoolers and their families. The program has enrolled more than 25 million children since its inception.
