WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins today congratulated officials at Cianbro Corporation in Pittsfield and Bath Iron Works (BIW) after the two companies announced that they have entered into a partnership to complete the retrofit and conversion of two sulfur tankers into U.S.-flagged, new generation, 370-foot, multi-purpose supply vessels. Cianbro was awarded the contract by Hornbeck Offshore Services, LLC of Covington, Louisiana. Cianbro has awarded BIW a subcontract to assist with the project. This will represent the first commercial shipwork performed at BIW in 20 years.
The companies say work will take place at Cianbro’s facility on Cassidy Point in Portland, and at Bath Iron Works’ facilities in Bath and Brunswick.
“This contract is exciting news for two of Maine’s leading employers and a unique opportunity for the highly-skilled workforce at Cianbro and Bath Iron Works to work together on this conversion project,” said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “Maine has a long and proud history in shipbuilding and maritime construction. We applaud this partnership and its positive impact on Maine’s shipbuilding industrial base.”
