SENATORS SNOWE AND COLLINS ANNOUNCE OVER $400,000 TO MAINE FOR HEART & VASCULAR DISEASE RESEARCH

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) has awarded a $403,570 grant to the Maine Medical Center in Portland for a research project entitled “New Cardiac Surgery Programs: Patients, Outcomes, Access.”   “We are always pleased to see federal support for medical research efforts in Maine,” said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.  “Heart and vascular diseases pose serious problems for many citizens in our State and our Nation, and this project is an important step in further understanding and addressing these issues.”               NHLBI plans, conducts, fosters, and supports an integrated and coordinated program of basic research, clinical investigations and trials, observational studies, and demonstration and education projects.  Research is related to the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart, blood vessel, lung, and blood diseases; and sleep disorders. The NHLBI plans and directs research in development and evaluation of interventions and devices related to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from such diseases and disorders.
