WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) has awarded $1,137,480 in grant funding to Jackson Laboratory and the City of Portland for health-related projects.
“The importance of accessible health care and continued medical research in Maine cannot be overstated. This funding from the Department of Health and Human Services will contribute to the ongoing effort to not only address Maine’s growing healthcare needs but to advance our state’s medical research efforts as well,” said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.
The federal grants were apportioned as follows:
• $473,880 to the City of Portland for a Health Center Cluster.
• $344,400 to Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor for a research project on diabetes. The grant was awarded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
• $319,200 to Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor for a project on genome research. The grant was awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
The Office of Grants Management and Policy (OGMP) is the lead grants administrative policy and oversight office in the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). OGMP serves customers throughout HHS and the public by providing leadership and quality customer service in all areas of grants management, including policy development and guidance, oversight and review, financial and business management, expert best practices consultation, technical assistance, and training.
Under OGMP’s leadership, the Department of Health & Human Services manages approximately 300 grant programs and awards over $239 billion in mandatory and discretionary grant funds annually.
