SENATORS SNOWE AND COLLINS ANNOUNCE $527,175 AWARDED TO JACKSON LABORATORY

WASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that two grants totaling $527,175 have been awarded to the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor by the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). "Funding for health research is of significant value to the State of Maine as well as the nation," Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "Thanks to the receipt of funding for Jackson Laboratory, Maine is able to remain a leader in worldwide health-related research."

One of the grants is for $184,950 and was awarded by the National Center for Research Resources. It will be used to fund an ASI-Spectral Karyotyping (SKY) System. The second grant is for $342,225 and was awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. It will be used to fund Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry Research.

The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) serves as a "catalyst for discovery" by creating and providing critical research technologies and shared resources. This infrastructure underpins biomedical research and enables advances that improve the health of the Nation''s citizens.

NIGMS is one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the principal biomedical research agency of the Federal Government. NIH is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It primarily supports basic biomedical research that lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The Institute''s training programs help provide the most critical element of good research: well-prepared scientists.
