Senators King, Collins Celebrate National Lobster Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Angus King and Susan Collins released a statement in honor of National Lobster Day. In July, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution introduced by Senators King and Collins that designated September 25, 2017 as National Lobster Day, which recognizes the historic and economic importance of lobster in the United States.

“Maine’s lobster industry is a significant driver of our economy and supports communities up and down our coast,” Senators King and Collins said in a joint statement. “Landing a record 130 million pounds of lobster in 2016, the thousands of harvesters, processors, and shippers in our state work to ensure that this delicious Maine product can be enjoyed across the country and around the world. Lobster is a livelihood and a way of life for many Maine people, and we will continue to advocate for this proud industry so that it will remain robust for generations to come.”

Lobster continues to be one of the largest catches in U.S. waters, with nearly 150 million pounds landed each year. The industry is a significant economic catalyst and important cultural tradition for coastal communities.
