Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King congratulated students from Bangor High School on winning the regional competition for the 2018 National Science Bowl (NSB), sponsored by the Department of Energy. The students will now advance to compete in the NSB National Finals this April in Washington, D.C.
“We are pleased to congratulate this group of bright students at Bangor High School on advancing to the National Science Bowl Finals,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Bangor High School’s impressive accomplishment demonstrates their firm grasp of science, technology, engineering, and math skills, which will prepare them for future jobs in these exciting and fast-growing fields. We are very proud of these students, and we wish them all the best in the final stage of the competition.”
The NSB brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics, and math.
Bangor High School’s team is coached by Science Department Chairperson Cary James, and includes team captain David Rubin ‘18, Sarah Marcotte ‘18, Wyatt Pyzynski ‘18, Nick Jacobs, ‘19, and Noah B. Robinson ‘19.
The top 16 high school teams and the top 16 middle school teams in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. Last year, the first and second place high school teams received all-expenses-paid science trips to Alaska, where they learned more about glaciology, marine and avian biology, geology, and plate tectonics. This year’s prizes for the top two finishers will be announced at a later date.
