The grant will fund the development of approximately 20 acres of land, including more than 4,500 grave sites, combined administration and maintenance building, a committal service shelter, and associated roads, drainage, and grading.
"This grant is wonderful news," said Senators Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. "A veterans' cemetery in northern Maine is an appropriate and fitting tribute to the region's many men and women who have served their country in the military. We applaud the Department of Veterans affairs for awarding the grant, and thus bestowing recognition on the contributions of northern Maine's veterans."
The state of Maine applied for the grant through the Bureau of Maine Veterans' Services.
