Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins spoke with a group of students from across Maine who are participating in the final round of the National History Day contest this week in Washington. These students were victorious in Maine’s statewide competition and will now represent our state as they compete alongside nearly 3,000 of our country’s top young historians.

“I am so proud to welcome these bright and talented students to our nation’s Capital,” said Senator Collins. “I wish them luck on the national stage, and I am confident they will do a wonderful job representing the State of Maine.”

Every year, approximately 600,000 students grade 6 through 12 compete in National History Day, and about 3,000 students qualify for the national finals, which takes place in College Park, Maryland. To participate, students research topics related to a national theme and present their findings with exhibits, documentaries, performances, or papers. This year’s theme is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”
