Washington, D.C. –U.S. Senator Susan Collins met with Falmouth native John Bishop Wahlig III, who was selected for the United States Senate Page Program for the spring of 2019. John was nominated to the program by Senator Collins following a competitive selection process. He is the son of John and Jennifer Wahlig of Falmouth.
“I was proud to nominate John to the Senate Page Program, and I know he will do an exceptional job in this important role,” said Senator Collins. “John is a highly motivated student with an impressive record of academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities. This opportunity will provide him with a unique opportunity to witness the legislative process firsthand.”
John is deeply involved in his community and has received awards for his leadership and entrepreneurship. He is a junior at Falmouth High School, where he serves as the student advisor to the Maine State Legislature. In addition, John is the founder and president of the Falmouth Computer Programming Club; CEO of Itvara LLC, an iOS development company; and president and teacher at Falmouth Girls Code, an eight-week course on the basics of computer science and programming for elementary school girls. He is also a sailing instructor at the Portland Yacht Club.
Senate pages must be high school juniors, at least sixteen years old, and attend school. Senate page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Capitol complex. Other duties include preparing the chamber for Senate sessions and carrying bills and amendments to the desk. Pages attend classes in the early morning at the United States Senate Page School, a program fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
With 30 pages per session, only the most senior members of the Senate can sponsor pages. Maine students who are interested in applying for future sessions of the Senate Page Program can do so through Senator Collins’ website at: https://www.collins.senate.gov/services/students
