Lewiston, ME – U.S. Senator Susan Collins was in Lewiston today to see the new state-of-the-art facility at Saint Mary’s Hospital that will serve Mainers who are battling opioid use disorder, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other mental health challenges. The unit will officially open later this fall.
“As our country continues to confront the public health crisis caused by the pandemic, the completion of this impressive treatment facility at St. Mary’s Hospital could not come at a more critical time. Mainers battling opioid addiction and mental health disorders—which have only been exacerbated by the pandemic—will soon have access to the high-quality, compassionate care they need to achieve recovery and healing,” said Senator Collins.
St. Mary’s is one of the largest employers in Androscoggin County and the State of Maine. Across its departments, it employs 1,400 people. In recent years, St. Mary’s has been undergoing a three-part renovation project. The first phase involved the renovation of the child and adolescent behavioral health unit; the second phase focused on creating a building to hold the infusion center for oncology and rheumatology; and this third phase will culminate in the construction of this mental health facility.
Senator Collins is the leading voice in the Senate in protecting the Provider Relief Fund, federal funding which has helped support hospitals like St. Mary’s throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, St. Mary’s has received more than $3 million from this fund.
