South Portland, ME — This morning, U.S. Senator Susan Collins visited American Steel and Aluminum (ASA) to tour the facility, meet with leadership, and speak with employees.

“American Steel and Aluminum serves as a job-creating economic engine in South Portland and Lewiston.  I am pleased that ASA received a forgivable loan through the Paycheck Protection Program I co-authored, which helped to sustain the jobs of 153 skilled employees,” said Senator Collins.  “As we continue to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the hard work, dedication, and resiliency of employees at Maine manufacturers are key to a robust economic recovery, and I will continue to support them every step of the way.”

ASA received a forgivable loan through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).  Senator Collins co-authored the PPP to help small employers stay afloat and continue paying their workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Since its launch in early April, more than 28,000 Maine small businesses and self-employed individuals have received nearly $2.3 billion in forgivable loans, helping to support more than 250,000 jobs throughout the state.

ASA, which operates facilities in South Portland and Lewiston, processes metal materials for large and small orders across New England, New York, and New Jersey. They are the only full-service metals distributor in Maine, providing precision machining services for Maine companies such as Bath Iron Works, Hussey Seating, and Fisher Engineering. The company employs approximately 60 in South Portland.
