Washington, D.C.—Yesterday, U.S. Senator Susan Collins spoke to more than 100 Brewer Community School students from five 3rd grade classrooms via video conference from her Washington, D.C., office. Senator Collins explained to students how a bill becomes a law and answered questions from students.
“I am so proud of your efforts to make the lobster our state crustacean, and I’m very impressed by all that you are learning about the legislative process,” Senator Collins told students during the video conference. “Every bill starts with an idea like yours.”
This year, Brewer Community School students successfully lobbied for a bill in the Maine legislature that made the American lobster the official crustacean of Maine. Governor Paul LePage signed the bill into law at a ceremony at Brewer Community School last month.
