U.S. Senator Susan Collins today released the following statement on the resignation of Cuban leader Fidel Castro:
“It is unlikely that Fidel Castro's decision to step down after a half century of rule will bring freedom to the Cuban people if power is simply transferred from one dictator to another.
“The Cuban people deserve the opportunity to choose their own leaders through fair elections. That would truly be the beginning of freedom for the Cuban people.
“And the United States could take advantage of this change in leadership to move towards normalized realations with Cuba.”
