Washington, D.C. — This morning, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at the Maine Credit Union League (MCUL) Congressional Breakfast, an annual event hosted by MCUL during the Credit Union National Association’s government affairs conference.
“Maine credit unions have long been valued partners of the innovators, job creators, and hard-working people of our state,” said Senator Collins. “In addition, MCUL has taken on a vital role as protectors of our most vulnerable friends, neighbors, and family members. I look forward to our continued work together.”
Senator Collins also congratulated MCUL’s Campaign to End Hunger success:
“Your 2019 Campaign to End Hunger set a new record of more than $832,000, bringing the total for this great project to more than $9.4 million since it began in 1990,” Senator Collins continued. “It is wonderful that your kick-off event for this year featured retired Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills. The foundation that brave patriot and his wife, Kelsey, founded to support wounded veterans and their families embodies the credit union philosophy of people helping people.”
Founded in 1938, MCUL is a nonprofit, professional trade association committed to helping credit unions succeed and to improving the financial lives of their members.

As the Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee, helping to protect seniors from fraud and financial exploitation is one of Senator Collins’ highest priorities. In 2018, the Senior $afe Act, a bipartisan bill Senator Collins authored, was signed into law. The legislation is based upon the first-in-the-nation program launched in Maine, with MCUL as a leading partner.
Last summer, Senator Collins visited the Maine Credit Union League’s headquarters in Westbrook to discuss the security measures and technology Maine’s credit unions use to protect member data and prevent financial fraud. As a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Collins has worked to advance legislation and policies to better protect our nation from cyberattacks.
Senator Collins also cosponsored the Credit Union Residential Loan Parity Act, legislation that became law as part of the banking reform package in 2018. She also fought to preserve the tax-exempt status of credit unions under the 2017 tax reform law because of the considerable benefits credit unions provide to the public.
