Senator Collins attended the 2006 Dirigo Girls State conference held at Husson College in Bangor on June 18th. The program is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. It is a youth citizenship program for young women who have completed their junior year of high school and shown leadership, citizenship, and cooperativeness throughout their high school career. The week long session offers training in the process of self-government and good citizenship as practiced in a democratic society. Senator Collins spoke to the 400 girls that were chosen from around the state of Maine.
This was the 12th time that Senator Collins has addressed the Girls State delegates on opening night of the session. Senator Collins was a delegate to Dirigo Girls State in 1970 as a student from Caribou High School.
