Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Military Family Caucus, participated in the American Red Cross Holiday for Heroes programs, which allows Senators and congressional staff to send holiday cards to servicemembers, veterans, and their families.

“The men and women serving in our military, along with their families and our nation’s veterans, deserve our respect, compassion, and support for the many sacrifices they make to defend our nation’s freedom,” said Senator Collins. “Members of our military are often deployed to distant places, far from their families and the comfort of home.  For those brave men and women in our Armed Forces who can’t be with their loved ones this holiday season, we should join together to support these heroes and their families and express our gratitude for all that they do on our behalf.”

In December 2007, Walter Reed Army Medical Center asked the Red Cross to help distribute thousands of holiday cards for wounded service men and women. In response to the request, the Red Cross turned the project into a nationwide effort that could reach members of the military at other facilities in the U.S. and around the world.  In previous Capitol Hill signing events, organizers collected more than 2,000 holiday cards.
