Senator Collins Secures Key Wins for BIW in FY24 Appropriations Bills

Legislation includes $33.7 billion for U.S. Navy shipbuilding, the largest shipbuilding budget ever provided

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Defense, secured several funding provisions for Bath Iron Works (BIW) in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 appropriations package.  Senator Collins played a key role in negotiating the FY 2024 spending bills, which passed Congress with overwhelming support and were signed into law by the President.

“As the Chinese navy rapidly expands to more than 435 warships by 2030 and American interests face renewed pressures across the globe, this legislation provides our industrial base with the resources needed to counter these emerging threats,” said Senator Collins.  “This legislation includes $33.7 billion for U.S. Navy shipbuilding, which is the largest shipbuilding budget ever provided.  It also includes down payments for both an additional DDG-51 destroyer and an amphibious ship.  I worked hard to secure this funding, which will help support good jobs at Bath Iron Works and its suppliers across Maine to ensure they can continue to support the Navy’s fleet by building the best surface combatant warships in the world.”

Key provisions secured by Senator Collins in the FY 2024 appropriations package include:

  • $4.2 billion for the construction of two DDG-51 destroyers, one of which will be produced by BIW.
  • $1.3 billion for advanced procurement of an additional DDG-51 in FY 2025.
  • $300 million for BIW, other large surface combatant shipyards, and their suppliers to make investments in new facilities and equipment.
  • $60 million towards a multi-use facility with a parking garage to support quality of life initiatives at BIW.
  • $43.2 million above the President’s budget request to accelerate development of the ship design tool for DDG(X) that will enable a more collaborative and modernized method for designing the Navy’s next-generation destroyer.
