The funding will be used to expand the use of hybrid composite-concrete bridge designs, which have been demonstrated in Maine to be cheaper to build and have lower life cycle costs. These designs could be replicated in other parts of the country.
"The research being conducted at the University of Maine into advanced bridge designs has already paid dividends with lower-cost, yet stronger, bridge designs," said Senator Collins. "I am delighted to have worked to successfully secure this funding that will be used for continued research and development. I look forward to seeing continued success from this project."
The FY 2010 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Bill was approved today by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development. It is now scheduled to be considered by the full Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday.
