SENATOR COLLINS RELEASES STATEMENT ON WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCEMENT OF ROB PORTMAN FOR WHITE HOUSE BUDGET DIRECTOR

WASHINGTON, DC--President Bush is expected to announce this morning that U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman will be chosen to be the next White House budget director.  The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Senator Collins, will have joint jurisdiction over the nomination.                “Ambassador Portman is a great choice for this position.  As a former Congressman, he understands the federal budget. And perhaps more importantly, he understands the inner workings of Congress.               “He is a well-respected and dedicated public servant who is extraordinarily capable and has an ability to work through complicated issues in a diplomatic way.               “I spoke to the Ambassador this morning about his nomination and congratulated him.  I look forward to considering his nomination in the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee as soon as possible.”
