WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Senator Susan Collins has released this statement following the announcement by the Governor’s office that a soldier with Maine ties was killed Thursday by an improvised explosive device in Balad, Iraq . Joseph Alan Lucas, 23, who was raised in Monson, was a Specialist with A Troop, 57 Armor Squadron, 3rd Infantry Division and stationed in Georgia at the time of his death.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Specialist Joseph Lucas. Specialist Lucas was bravely serving his country when he made the ultimate sacrifice. I know that I join all Mainers in being both proud and grateful for the service and dedication this young soldier gave to our nation. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.”
