"For some students, Pell Grants are crucial to their ability to obtain higher education and thus, the opportunity to participate fully in the American dream. And increasing Pell Grant awards has long been a priority of mine," Senator Collins said. "I am honored to be recognized by the U.S. Student Association, since students are the ones directly affected by Pell Grant funding."
USSA is the nation's oldest and largest student organization representing over one million students across the country. This year, the organization focused largely on expanding educational access for students — which has been a top priority for Senator Collins as well.
Senator Collins introduced legislation earlier this year to increase the maximum Pell Grant award to $4,500 for the 2005-2006 award year, a $450 increase in a single year. It also provides higher authorization levels for the Pell maximum grant that would allow for a doubling of the maximum grant to $9,000 over the next five years.
Senator Collins also supported a successful amendment to the budget resolution that increases the maximum Pell Grant award to $4,500 – building on the foundation of the Collins bill.
