SENATOR COLLINS RECEIVES COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD FROM UNIVERSITY OF MAINE FORT KENT NURSING DEPARTMENT

The University of Maine at Fort Kent Division of Nursing recently honored U.S. Senator Susan Collins with its Community Leadership Award in recognition of her dedicated leadership and support of the nursing profession. The award was announced by UMFK President Dick Cost during a pinning ceremony for nursing program graduates.

President Cost expressed his appreciation for Senator Collins' efforts during the presentation of the award. "Senator Collins has made an outstanding contribution to health care and to the advancement of professional nursing education. She consistently makes time to meet with the Deans and Directors of Maine's nursing programs, and informs herself of the issues facing nursing and nursing education. She has worked tirelessly to advocate and promote nursing and nursing education for the State of Maine in the nation."

Senator Collins, who was unable to attend the event in person because the Senate was in session, thanked the group in videotaped remarks that were played at the ceremony.

"I am deeply grateful to be recognized by the Division of Nursing at the University of Maine at Fort Kent with your Community Leader Award," said Senator Collins. "To be included in this very special day for the Class of 2010 adds to the honor. Growing up in Aroostook County, I know the vital role nurses play in our health care system, especially in our rural regions. That is why one of my highest priorities in the Senate has always been to increase funding for nurse workforce programs."
