SENATOR COLLINS RECEIVES AWARD FROM SMALL BUSINESS COUNCIL

In a recent ceremony, U.S. Senator Susan Collins received the 2008 Congressional Award from the Small Business Council of America. Senator Collins was given the award for her continued support on behalf of American small business in connection with federal tax matters and to recognize her support of the entrepreneurial spirit of America's private enterprise.

“I am honored to receive the Small Business Council’s Congressional Award,” noted Senator Collins. “It means so much to me to be recognized, because small business has always been a big part of who I am. I grew up in a small business family, so from my childhood I was immersed in the issues that affect small business.”

Senator Collins has continued to work to expand access to affordable health care and to address the rising cost of health care, which is often especially critical to small businesses. Many small businesses in America are unable to absorb double-digit increases in health insurance premiums each year. To address this problem, Senator Collins has introduced legislation with Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) that combines a variety of public and private approaches to make quality health care coverage more affordable and available.

Senator Collins also spoke about her support for meaningful reform of the estate tax and her work in the Senate to reach a compromise on this important issue.

The Small Business Council of America is a national organization representing the federal income and estate tax, health care, pension and other benefit interests of privately held and family owned businesses.
