SENATOR COLLINS RECEIVES AWARD FROM NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION

U.S. Senator Susan Collins was honored yesterday with a Special Recognition Award from the National School Boards Association (NSBA), presented by NSBA President Sonny Savoie. School board members from Maine and across the country were in Washington to attend the NSBA's annual leadership conference.

The NSBA recognized Senator Collins for her leadership to champion key education investments in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Senator Collins helped author the economic stimulus legislation last year.

"I am grateful for this recognition by the National School Boards Association and for your service to our schools and communities across the country," said Senator Collins. "The economic stimulus bill, which I helped author, included an unprecedented investment in education. During negotiations, I fought particularly hard for special education funding since it is an unfunded federal mandate that affects every school district. I was pleased that the final bill included more than $90 billion in new money for education."

Senator Collins also met with members of the Maine School Boards Association attending the conference: Terry McCabe (Associate Executive Director), Ashley O'Brien (President), Maureen King (President-Elect), Susan Campbell (Vice President), and Kristin Malin (Past President.)
