SENATOR COLLINS RECEIVES 2008 DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARD

During a ceremony at the Bangor Civic Center tonight, the Katahdin Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America presented U.S. Senator Susan Collins with its 2008 Distinguished Citizen Award. The award recognizes an “individual who has gone beyond the expected and dedicated a great deal of time to helping others in their community. Those chosen are not necessarily Boy Scout volunteers, but rather people who personify what the Boy Scouts stands for -- good citizenship, outstanding moral fiber and a dedication to others.”

“To be recognized for citizenship by an organization dedicated to fostering the values of citizenship is deeply gratifying,” said Senator Collins. “For 88 years, the Katahdin Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America has successfully carried out its mission of instilling in boys the ideals of citizenship, responsibility, service to others, and leadership. The remarkable thing about Scouting is that those invaluable lessons are taught in an atmosphere of fun and adventure. For generations, the Boy Scouts has instilled the timeless values of honor, duty, and service. I am truly grateful to be recognized with this wonderful honor.”

Previous recipients of the Distinguished Citizen award include Governor John Baldacci, Joe and Sue Cyr, Dr. John Winkin, Dr. Frederick Hutchinson, Peter Vigue, James Robbins, Herbert Haynes, and Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems and St. Joseph Healthcare.
