SENATOR COLLINS PARTICIPATES IN GROUNDBREAKING AT BIGELOW LABORATORIES IN EAST BOOTHBAY

U.S. Senator Susan Collins participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for Bigelow Laboratory's new Center for Blue Biotechnology in East Boothbay.

"We are here to celebrate not just the groundbreaking for an exciting new research center, but also 37 years of accomplishments by the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. From single-celled microbes to satellite images from space, this great institution has advanced our understanding of marine ecosystems. Bigelow has brought distinction to our state and invaluable knowledge to our world," said Senator Collins.

Senator Collins has long been a strong advocate for the Bigelow Laboratory. In 2005, she successfully secured $1.5 million in federal funding to assist in the purchase of the land for this Center for Blue Biotechnology. In July 2010, the Senate Appropriations Committee, at Senator Collins' request, gave preliminary approval for an additional $300,000 in funding for the Center for the Culture of Marine Phytoplankton.
