U.S. Senator Susan Collins today offered her support and assistance to Maine residents as they begin the process of cleaning up following this week’s devastating spring storm.
“The recent severe weather in Maine has displaced many families from their homes and caused significant property damage throughout our state,” said Senator Collins. “As communities and families begin the cleanup and rebuilding process, I want them to know that they have my full support and I will work with state and local officials to help ensure that federal resources are available to those in need.”
Camp Ellis in Saco was one of the hardest hit areas. Senator Collins has long been concerned with the safety and well being of the people of Camp Ellis and the severe erosion being caused by a jetty, built by the Army Corps of Engineers, more than 100 years ago. On March 13, 2007, Senators Collins and Olympia Snowe introduced the Camp Ellis Beach Restoration Act to ensure that the Army Corps has the resources and direction necessary to fully protect Camp Ellis. On March 30, 2007, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted to authorize $20 million to help ensure that the Army Corps will have the funds necessary to fully protect the residents and beachfront at Camp Ellis.
