U.S. Senator Susan Collins was presented last night with the National Association of Community Health Center's Distinguished Community Health Center Champion Award. Senator Collins has been a long-time advocate for increased funding for community health centers, and her successful efforts resulted in Maine's community health care centers receiving $19.4 in federal funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which was signed into law last year.
"In many areas of Maine, community health centers are the only option for residents seeking high quality, primary care," said Senator Collins during her remarks. "They are a vital part of our health care safety net, providing comprehensive primary care services to individuals, regardless of their ability to pay, in rural and underserved areas. I am truly honored to receive this award, and I will continue to be a champion for our country's community health centers."
Senator Collins was also on hand to congratulate the Rev. Bob Carlson of Bangor, President of Penobscot Community Health Care, who accepted the NACHC's Elizabeth K. Cooke Advocacy MVP Award.
"In just ten short years, Reverend Bob has helped to build Penobscot Community Health Care into the largest health center and largest primary care practice in Maine. He has made an invaluable contribution to our community, and this national award recognizing his dedication is richly deserved."
